Dentist in Portland, OR
For years, the only option for replacing lost teeth was to get dentures. Today, that is no longer true. Now, dental implants offer a more permanent solution to missing teeth. Implants have a number of benefits over dentures, and they have become an option for most of our patients here at Pacific Woods Dental. Implants have become very popular, but are they right for you?
What Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are made up of three parts. The first is the implant or post. This post, generally made from a durable material such as titanium, is implanted into the gums and anchored in the jawbone. The abutment is then attached to the post. This is the support for the crown, the actual replacement tooth. The crown is usually made of porcelain or zirconium and looks very similar to natural teeth.
There are three different types of implants you can get. If you are missing a single tooth, you can replace it with a single implant. Another option is to replace several teeth with implants. These implants function similar to a bridge in that there are natural teeth on either end, although those teeth do not support the implants in any way. The third option is a full mouth replacement, sometimes referred to as all-on-four implants. We place four posts in your mouth and anchor all of your replacement teeth to them.
How Are Dental Implants Placed?
Before the procedure to actually place your implants, we will take detailed measurements and images of your mouth. These will be used to create your implants. Our goal is to make them look and feel as natural as possible. In some cases, you may need to have your tooth extractions done first and then return for the implants after you have healed. We may also need to do a bone graft if you have lost some of the density in your jawbone. This is something we will discuss during your initial consultation and dental exam.
On the day of receiving your implants, you will come in and be placed under anesthesia. We will then place the posts. Depending on your oral health, you may need to wait several months for the posts to fuse with your jawbone. In other cases, we may be able to place the full implants on the same day. Again, it depends on your unique situation.
Why Get Dental Implants?
There are a number of reasons to consider dental implants. They are permanent, unlike dentures, so you do not have to remove them for cleaning. They feel much more like natural teeth, and most people cannot tell the difference. You also do not have to worry about dropping or damaging them. Taking care of implants is easy, too. You simply brush and floss them as you would natural teeth.
Who Should Consider Dental Implants?
If you have any missing teeth, dental implants may be an ideal solution. Whether it is one tooth or the majority of your teeth, implants can be an option. Contact Pacific Woods Dental today at 503-292-5483 to schedule a consultation to discuss getting implants with one of our team members.
